Advice on UL Safety Requirements:

Our customer was developing a wireless medical monitor using a rechargeable battery. The charger and battery mechanical designs were nearly complete. Nexergy was asked to design the internal battery and charger electronics. During preliminary discussions with the customer's design staff we recognized that the system would require UL60601-1 listing and that there were some significant safety requirements related to the design of the battery case and its charging input terminals which were not met by their current design and which would be difficult to solve without major revision. Nexergy recommended that the customer contact one of our business partners who provides medical products safety consulting. The consultant confirmed our concerns. Rather than go through an extensive redesign, the problem was resolved by replacing the rechargeable battery approach with primary cells.
