Nexergy Receives Commitment for Over $1 Million Purchase of Intrinsically Safe Lithium Ion Battery Packs

Lightweight, maintenance-free units approved for use in hazardous environments in which potentially explosive gasses may exist

Columbus, Ohio — July 8, 2008Nexergy, Inc., a leading manufacturer of battery packs and chargers, has received a commitment to purchase more than $1 million of lithium ion battery packs from a United Kingdom-based company supplying batteries for use in mines and other environments characterized by the potential presence of explosive gas.

These batteries represent one of the first lithium ion battery packs approved for and used in applications that require intrinsically safe systems. The packs are used to power miner’s cap lamps that have been qualified to IEC 62013-1, a standard of the International Electrotechnical Commission.

The intrinsically safe qualified eight-cell battery packs replace large sealed lead acid batteries. The key requirement for intrinsic safety is that the device not contain any components that produce sparks or that can hold enough energy to produce a spark of sufficient energy to cause an ignition in an explosive atmosphere.

As the alternative energy source to the heavier sealed lead acid battery, the lithium ion battery reduces the weight of a miner’s cap lamp battery from 4.6 pounds (2.1 kilograms) to 1.3 pounds (0.6 kilograms) while providing the same runtime between charges. Additionally, the lithium ion battery packs are maintenance-free, as opposed to most sealed lead acid batteries, which require regular maintenance.

Currently, Nexergy is producing these battery packs for use in the customer’s European and Australian markets. The production rate of these packs is expected to increase by 20 percent in the North American market upon the approval of the design by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

The product is the result of more than two years’ worth of development and collaboration with the customer to ensure the battery pack meets the needs of this demanding market.

“Nexergy has worked with its customer to ensure that the battery pack meets MSHA requirements as well as European intrinsically safe requirement needs,” said Nexergy President and CEO Phil Glandon. “This kind of collaboration reflects our overall focus as a company — to create innovative portable designs for our OEM customers within their time requirements and then hand off those designs to our manufacturing organization for the delivery of the highest-quality products on time and anywhere in the world.”
